THOMAS HILLERSDEN BULTEEL (1798-1878)
Thomas Hillersden Bulteel was born on February 5th 1798 at Belle Vue, Plymstock. He was the third son of Mr Thomas Hillersden Bulteel and his wife, the former Miss Ann Harris, whom he had married at Plymstock Parish Church on April 14th 1791. The Bulteel and Harris families both owned a considerable amount of land in and around Plymstock. His father was buried at Plymstock Parish Church on September 22nd 1815 and as both his older brothers had died at the British siege of Bergen-op-Zoom, in the Netherlands, in 1814, the younger Thomas Hillersden Bulteel succeeded to the estate. Mr Thomas Hillersden Bulteel married Miss Caroline Louisa Harris at Plymstock Parish Church on April 20th 1835. Thomas was baptised on October 18th 1837. According to the 1841 census, he was still in the Royal Navy at the age of 43 but was living at Bovisand with his young wife (she was only 25) and two children, Thomas, then 3 years of age, and Caroline, only 6 months old. It was in that year that he joined the Naval Bank following the death of Mr John Harris of Radford House, Plymstock. He was chosen as Mayor of Plymouth in 1847. He was also a Justice of the Peace. Mr Thomas Hillersden Bulteel died on Monday December 16th 1878. In accordance with his wishes, the funeral was a very simple affair. There were no flowers, gloves or hat-bands and the hearse was undecorated. The male mourners had to walk to the cemetery, where they were met by the ladies. He was survived by three sons: Dr Bulteel of Tamerton Foliot; Mr Thomas Bulteel; and Mr Christopher Harris Bulteel, and several daughters. Buried in the same grave just after Mr Bulteel was the mortal remains of Mrs Selina Prestwood Bulteel, the wife of Mr Christopher Harris Bulteel. They had only been married since 1876 but she died on December 19th 1878 at the very young age of 30. Sources (incomplete):
