Charles Robert Everson was born in 1859 at Bere Ferrers, Devon, to Mr Thomas and Mrs Grace Everson. Thomas was a farm labourer. They already had two children, William Henry Everson and Sarah Jane Everson. The young Charles first became a blacksmith before moving to South Wales, where he gained some experience of public transport. On Friday December 9th 1892, at the age of 32, he was appointed as manager of Plymouth's newly formed Tramways Department. In company with Aldemran Bray, he used to travel to north Devon to purchase cobs for the transport service. Over the next 27 years until his retirement in 1919 he supervised the growth of tramway transport in Plymouth from one line between West Hoe and Compton, through electrification and the amalgamation with the Devonport and District Tramways system in 1916, following the amalgamation of the Three Towns. After retirement, Mr Everson interested himself in farming and took a keen interest in public affairs where he lived in Plymstock, where he became chairman of the Parish Council. Mr Charles Robert Everson died unexpectedly at Plymstock on Monday October 9th 1939, at the age of 79 years.
