Mr Arthur Geoffrey Annesley Harmsworth was born on March 29th 1904, the youngest son of Sir Leicester Harmsworth 1st Bart. and nephew of the Viscounts Northcliffe and Rothermere. Printing ink was therefore in his blood. He was educated at Harrow. With his brother, Sir Harold Harmsworth, he had been involved in newspaper production in the Westcountry since 1933. He served as a British War Correspondent in 1939-40 but then joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve for the duration of the War. Following the death of his father and brother, he became chairman of the Western Morning News Co. Ltd. and other parts of the Harmsworth Press Ltd conglomerate. (Sir R Leicester Harmsworth, Bart, funeral was at St Jude's on the Hill, Hampstead, and there was a memorial service at St Andrew's Church 22-1-1937.)
