HENRY GEORGE HURRELL (1901-1981)
Henry George Hurrell was born on July 3rd 1901, the only son of Mr & Mrs Henry Hurrell, corn merchant, of Peverell Park Villa, Tavistock Road, Devonport. [1] After attending Plymouth College, Henry went on to Christ Church, Cambridge, where he read sciences, after which he joined the family business, Messrs Hurrell & Company Ltd. [1] On June 22nd 1927 Mr Henry George Hurrell married Miss Lillian Jones, youngest daughter of Mr & Mrs Leonard Jones, of Mannamead, Plymouth. [1] He continued to run the family business until around 1937/38, when he sold out to Spillers Milling Group and then devoted his life to a silver fox farm near Moorgate, Wrangaton, which his father had sold years before. He then became more familiarly known as 'HG' and became well known as a painter of nature, birdwatcher and a maker of natural history films. [1] Mrs Lillian Hurrell died in 1980 at the age of 85 years. [1] Mr Henry George Hurrell died at his home, Moorgate, Wrangaton, on Saturday May 23rd 1981. He was 79 years of age. [1] The funeral was at Mutley Baptist Church on Friday May 29th 1981. [2] He was survived by two sons, Leonard and Kenneth, and a daughter, Elaine. [2] Sources:
