Doctor ANDREW SCOTLAND

Doctor Andrew Scotland was the Director of Education at Plymouth for 27 years.

Andrew Scotland was born on April 20th 1905.  [1]

His first three years after schooling were spent as a sub-editor and book reviewer for the "Glasgow Herald" newspaper.  He obtained a Master of Arts degree in English Language and Literature, with 1st Class Honours, at Glasgow University in 1926 and the University made him a Doctor of Philosophy 1929 for his research work in English.  During that time he held various teaching posts in Glasgow and also lectured at the University.  In 1931 he took up his first administrative post at Glasgow, as Deputy Director of Education.  Between 1932 and 1937 he was Assistant Director of Education at Stoke-on-Trent and then became Director Education at Dudley, in Worcestershire.  [2]

He was appointed the new Director of Education for Plymouth on Friday January 9th 1942.  [3]

Doctor Andrew Scotland married Miss Vera Margaret Law at Plymouth's Emmanuel Church on Saturday October 31st 1942.  [4]

During the Second World War, in addition to his educational duties, he was also recruited to interrogate German prisoners of war.  When the War was finished he did much to foster Anglo-German relations and played a major part in arranging the twinning of Plymouth with Bremen.  [2]

His first book was published in 1933 but his biggest triumph was the publication of juvenile editions of Sir Winston Churchill's "My Early Life" and "The Second World War".  [2]

In the aftermath of the Second World War, it was Doctor Scotland who re-established education in the City and organised the rebuilding of those schools that had been destroyed and the construction of new schools for the newly extended City.  He retired in 1969.  [2]

Mr Andrew Scotland, PhD MA, died at Mount Gould Hospital on Saturday February 21st 1976.  The funeral was at Efford Crematorium on Wednesday February 25th 1976.  [2]
