JAMES SAINT AUBYN (1783-1862)
James Saint Aubyn was born in 1783, the eldest son of Sir John and his mistress, Miss Martha Nicholls. Martha was the daughter of Mr John Nicholls, a landscape gardener. He succeeded to the Manor of Stoke Damerel but the baronetcy ceased when his father died in 1839. Sir John's will required James to set aside £130,000 to fund marriage settlements for each of his thirteen brothers and sisters. After schooling at Westminster School and Oriel College, Oxford, he married Miss Sarah White, the daughter of the Reverend Henry White, Rector of Fyfield in Hampshire. They had no sons but three daughters. During his lifetime he became known as a minor poet and an amateur artist and actor. Mr James Saint Aubyn died on Monday June 23rd 1862 in Essex and was buried at Stoke Damerel Parish Church on Wednesday July 2nd 1862. The Manor of Stoke Damerel, with the other estates, passed to Mr Edward Saint Aubyn, who was Sir John's seventh son, the fourth by Miss Juliana Vinicombe. Sources:
