PLYMSTOCK SHOPPING CENTRE, PLYMSTOCK

Sir George Hater-Hames, the chairman of Devon County Council, laid the foundation stone of the Plymstock Shopping Centre on Friday June 3rd 1960.  [1]

The development was to be undertaken by the Princegate Property Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the Kingsgate Investment Company Ltd, of London.  [1]

At a luncheon held afterwards at the Elfordleigh Hotel, Plympton, Sir George stated that the scheme would make Plymstock 'an individual pace that would not be absorbed by that place across the river'.  He added that: 'At the Plymstock shopping centre the housewife would be able to do her shopping in comfort, meet her friends for a chat, and still be back home in time to receive her children from school and prepare the next meal'.  [1]
