The Station was built by the South Devon Railway. The Up platform, towards London, was opened first on Tuesday August 1st 1871 and the Down platform followed several weeks later. It became known as the 'gentry's station' because it served the more prosperous districts of Mutley and Mannamead. When the London & South Western Railway started operating their service using the GWR's Tavistock Branch, they maintained their own staff at Mutley Station.
Because Mutley Station was so close to Plymouth North Road Station, it was regarded as an unneccseaary duplication and was closed from Thursday March 2nd 1939.
