PLYMPTON STATION
Plympton Station was located between Cornwood and Mutley Stations on the Great Western Railway main line. It was adjacent to Boringdon Road, Plympton. Station Road led to it from the main shops in the Ridgeway. The Station was built by the South Devon Railway and opened on Thursday June 15th 1848. [1] Passenger
train timetable, August 1852.......... To the west of the Station, on the Plymouth side of the bridge carrying the roadway to Colebrook, was a short siding that gave access to an L-shaped, stone storehouse adjacent to the main road to Plymouth. Although the siding was on the Down side it was accessible only from a trailing connection on the Up main line. The connection also provided a trailing cross-over facility between the Up and Down lines although there was no access from the siding direct on to the Down line. The storehouse was said to date from the Plympton branch of the Plymouth & Dartmoor Railway. The siding existed in 1866, when it and the storehouse were held under a 21-year lease. [2] The Station Master at Plympton Station in 1890 was Mr William Wills. [2a] Plympton Station was closed from Monday March 2nd 1959. [3] Sources:
