DEVONPORT REGISTRATION DISTRICT
The Parish of Stoke Damerel, which included the Borough of Devonport, formed the Stoke Damerel Registration District for Births, Deaths and Marriages, when that commenced on July 1st 1837. On November 9th 1898 it was re-titles as the Devonport Registration District. There were five sub-districts, based on Wards: Clowance; Saint Aubyn; Morice; Stoke; and Tamar. The Tamar sub-district was divided into Devonport North and Devonport South as from May 1st 1920. As from July 1st 1937 the Devonport Registration Districts were amalgamated in to the Plymouth Registration District under Plymouth's fourth Superintendent Registrar, Mr Walter Naylor. A Register Office was opened at 40 Whimple Street, Plymouth. More information about that and later premises will be found under Register Offices. Sources:
