REGISTRATION DISTRICTS

STOKE DAMEREL REGISTRATION DISTRICT

The Parish of Stoke Damerel, which included the Borough of Devonport, formed the Stoke Damerel Registration District for Births, Deaths and Marriages, when that commenced on July 1st 1837.

Stoke Damerel's first Superintendent Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages was Mr Joseph Elms, a solicitor, of 69 St Aubyn Street.  His deputy was Mr Richard Bennet Oram, a conveyancer, of 23 St Aubyn St

They were assisted by two Registrars of Marriages, Mr William Stonelake, of 62 St Aubyn Street, and Mr J T Towson, of 12 Trafalgar Place.

There were no fewer than five Registrars of Births and Deaths in District, allocated by Wards:

  • St Aubyn Ward - Mr Peter Pascoe, of 14 Cumberland Street;
  • Clowance Ward - Mr John Gedye, of 12 James Street Ope;
  • Morice Ward - Mr William Jacob Spry, of 8 Princess (sic) Street Ope;
  • Stoke Ward - Mr William M Rickard, of 16 Waterloo Street;
  • Tamar Ward - Mr John Bath, of 18 Lower Portland Place assisted by his deputy, timber merchant Mr Vincent Bird, of 29 Moon Street.

From November 9th 1898 the Stoke Damerel Registration District was re-titled -- and continues as -- the Devonport Registration District.
