Catherine Street ran from the junction of
Princess Place and Notte Street northwards to
Bedford Street, the
Municipal Offices and the western end of
Saint Andrew's Church.
Origin of the name, Catherine Street
It is claimed that this was the route taken by
Princess Katherine of Aragon after landing at
Sutton Pool on October 2nd 1501 and
Saint
Andrew's Church, where she gave thanks to Almighty God for a safe passage.
She was on her way to London to marry first HRH the Prince Arthur
and later HM King Henry VIII. [1]

History of
Catherine Street
| Many roads and streets in
Plymouth had alternative names at one time and according to the Town
Rental in 1706 Saint Catherine's Lane was also known as Workhouse
Street. [2] Benjamin Donn's map of Plymouth shows St
Katherine's Street running beyond what was then Nutt Street to the
Hoe, a section that later acquired the name Broad Hoe Lane.
[3]
The northern most part of Catherine Street still exists,
sandwiched between the eastern end of the
Guildhall and
Saint Andrew's
Church. |
