ROADS AND STREETS

CHAPEL STREET, EAST STONEHOUSE

Updated:  12 April 2011

Location of Chapel Street, Stonehouse

Chapel Street, Stonehouse, ran from the eastern end of Stonehouse Bridge, southwards across Edgcumbe Street to the junction with Emma Place, after which it became Durnford Street.

Origin of the name, Chapel Street

On the eastern side of the Street was the Church of Saint George.  It was a chapel-of-ease to Saint Andrew's Church in the centre of Plymouth until Stonehouse was created a separate parish.

History of Chapel Street, Stonehouse

Chapel Street was badly damaged during the Second World War and Saint George's Church was destroyed except for a portion of the tower.  Plymouth City Council acquired the remains in 1957 for £1,400.  [1]
