Devonport

 

Location

Cherry Garden Street, Devonport, ran south-westwards, parallel to Fore Street, from  Chapel Street to Catherine Street.

Principal buildings

The principal buildings on the south side of Cherry Garden Street in 1890 were:

  • the Volunteer Drill Hall

and on the north side:

  • the New Wine Vaults; the Wine Shades Public House; and the Cherry Garden Street Board Schools.

Principal businesses

The principal businesses on the south side in 1890 were:

  • Mrs Catherine Hamott, lodging house; Joseph Redaway, lodging house; Richard Edwin Lyle, shopkeeper; Jonathan Walters, shopkeeper; John Heard, shopkeeper; Joseph Paine, lodging house; John Knowles, shopkeeper; Mrs Elizabeth Cumbe, butcher; James Cardew, shopkeeper.

and on the north side (returning from Catherine Street):

  • John Mumford, cabinet maker; Thomas Pile, cabinet maker; Thomas Hooper, general smith; Robert Edward Couch, lamp dealer; Alexander Agar, coal merchant; Richard Rook, coal dealer; Charles Calvert, coal dealer; Richard Frost, lodging house; and Joseph Jenkins, lodging house.
