History of
Cherry Garden Street, Devonport
|
Cherry Garden Street was known as Back
Street when Benjamin Donn created his plan of Dock in 1765. At
that time, too, it gave access to Frederick Square Barracks.
[1] It had become Cherry
Garden Street by 1812, albeit with only three occupants [2].
Cherry Garden Street was renamed York Street between 1893 and 1897.

Whitfield states that the change was made at the request of sailors
who did not want their mates to know that their wives lived in the vicinity.
[4]
The principal building was
the Cherry Garden Street Board School, which later became
York Street School
as a result of the change of street name.
