ROADS AND STREETS

PALACE STREET

Created:  29 July 2011

Location of Palace Street

The present Palace Street runs between Saint Andrew Street and Buckwell Street.  It formerly ran from Saint Andrew Street across High Street to Batter Street, after which it was known as Stillman Street.

Origin of the name, Palace Street

The name comes from a building known as Palace Court, which is where a rich Plymouth merchant by the name of Mr Richard Paynter is said to have entertained Katherine of Aragon in 1501 on her way to London to become a wife of HM King Henry VIII.

Palace Street in 1914 included the former Lower Lane and Catte Street, while Middle Lane had now become Lower Lane.

History of Palace Street

During slum clearance work in the 1860s and 1870s the overcrowded properties in Lower Lane were demolished, the Lane widened through Catte Street as well and given its new name.

The Palace Court Board School was opened by the Plymouth School Board in 1881.
