PLYMOUTH ROADS AND STREETS

STILLMAN STREET

Location of Stillman Street, Plymouth

Stillman Street, Plymouth, ran eastwards as a continuation of Catte Street between Batter Street and Vauxhall Street.

Origin of the name, Stillman Street

Clearly Stillman is a personal name.  There was a John Stilleman listed in Devonshire Lay Subsidy of 1332 residing in the Manor of Sutton Rauf so it may be that this street is where he lived.  [1]

History of Stillman Street, Plymouth

The Place-names of Devon records a Stylemanstrete as existing in 1412. [2]

Worth quotes 'Stilman Street is where Mr Roope lives' from the Town Rental for 1706.  [3]

The Street was clearly well established by 1765 when Benjamin Donn drew his Plan.  [4]

By 1890 the name Stillman Street had been extended to cover the former Catte Street.  [5]
