PENNYCROSS NATIONAL SCHOOL

In the second week of August in 1858 a bazaar was held to raise funds for a school to be erected on land adjacent to St Pancras Chapel, Pennycross.  The site for it had been given by the Reverend J Hall Parlby of Manadon House.  The bazaar was to be held at Archery House, in the grounds of Manadon.   The school would not only be for labourers but also for farmers and anybody else in the neighbourhood.  Because of that, it was intended to appoint a master and mistress 'of higher attainment than is usual in country schools'.
