CASTLE STREET BOARD SCHOOL

The Plymouth School Board's premises in Castle Street, Plymouth, were opened on the evening of Monday September 28th 1874 by the Mayor of Plymouth, Mr Alfred Rooker.

Built by Messrs Lapthorne and Goad, the building was designed by Mr J Hine of Messrs Norman & Hine, architects.  The cost of the site was £772 13s 6d and the cost of the buildings, £1,390 6s 7d.  It was designed to accommodate 175 infants only.

By 1879 there were 191 on the register and an average attendance of 166.

In 1888 the mistress was Mrs Mary Smale.

Following the transfer of schools to local education authority control in 1903, the Castle Street Board School became the Castle Street Elementary School.
