HIGHFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL
Highfield Primary School is located on the eastern side of Torridge Way, Efford, Plymouth. The School was officially opened on Friday July 11th 1952 by Miss Florence Horsbrugh, the Minister of Education, although the ceremony was held at Efford Secondary Modern School. She was accompanied by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Alderman H E Wright; Mr J J Astor MP, the member for Sutton; Mr Leslie F Paul, chairman of the Plymouth Education Committee; and Doctor Andrew Scotland, the City's Director of Education. Two pupils form Highfield, Miss Janice Knight, 10, and Miss Eileen Bickell, 6, presented the Minister with a bouquet of flowers. The Minister went on to open nine more schools and attend an evening meeting in the Methodist Central Hall. [1] Mr A J Marcom was the Headmaster of the junior school in 1952-1955 and Miss H Mitchell was Headmistress of the infant school. Sources:
