HONICKNOWLE COUNTY JUNIOR SCHOOL

Updated:  04 March 2012

Honicknowle County Junior School was situated in Crownhill Road, on the corner with Little Dock Lane.

The School commenced on September 6th 1937 with just sixteen pupils in a church hall in Crownhill Village.  As the numbers grew so a new building was called for.  Work started on constructing the School in December 1937 when Honicknowle was still outside the City of Plymouth boundary and fell within the Devon County Local Education Authority area.  [1]

It was completed on November 1st 1938, at a cost of approximately £14,760, and could accommodate 300 children.  The building comprised an assembly hall, six class-rooms, staff rooms and cloak rooms.  [1]

The School was formally opened by Mr John E Daw, chairman of Devon County Council, on Wednesday November 23rd 1938, in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Mr G S Scoble.  [1]

Miss M Pearce was the first Headmistress.

Honicknowle County Junior School was transferred to the Plymouth Local Education Authority on April 1st 1939 when the City extended its boundary and became Honicknowle Junior School.
