MORICE TOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, DEVONPORT

From June 1st 1903 the Morice Town Board School in Charlotte Street, Devonport, became the Morice Town Elementary School, after the passing of the Education Act 1902, when it was transferred in to the control of the Devonport Local Education Authority.

In 1935 the Headmaster of the boys' school was Mr F J Dunn; the Headmistress of the girls' school was Miss A Boxhall; and the Headmistress of the infants' school was Miss E R Beare.

During the Second World War there was heavy bombing in this area, which was close to the Royal Dockyard, and the northern block of buildings was gutted.  The School did continue in a smaller way in the former Devonport High School building alongside St Michael's Church at the top of Albert Road.

Under the reorganisation of education brought about by the Education Act 1944, as from Sunday April 1st 1945 Morice Town Elementary became the Morice Town Primary School.
