PLYMOUTH EDUCATION AUTHORITY SCHOOLS The Borough of Plymouth was quicker off the mark than Devonport, as it adopted the Education Act 1902 as from April 1st 1903. Two new schools were already being planned by the Plymouth School Board. The one at Salisbury Road were opened by the Board, who continued to manage the School until May 1st. The remaining one, Hyde Park Road, was opened after April 1903 so it is listed here as a Local Education Authority School. On February 4th 1907 the Plymouth Local Education Authority resolved to adopt the principle that separate schools should be provided for boys and girls 'as best meeting the needs of the locality'. The Plymouth Local Education Authority opened the following new schools between 1903 and 1914: Hyde Park Road Elementary School 1904 Prince Rock Elementary School 1908 (Plymouth) Junior Technical School for Boys 1911 Because of the refusal of Devon County Council to pay for their school maintenance, some 300 pupils attending school in Plymouth but who lived in Stonehouse and other areas covered by the Devon County Local Education Authority, were given notice to leave during 1906. Following the amalgamation of Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport in 1914, the Local Education Authorities became one and took over from Devon County Council the responsibility for Stonehouse.
