LAIRA GREEN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Created:  28 January 2012

Laira Green Primary School was located in Beverley Road, Laira, Plymouth.

The School was formerly Laira Green Elementary School until March 30th 1945.

Clothes donated by the Canadian Red Cross were distributed to the children at the school on December 11th 1945.

A further gift from the people of Canada, 570 pounds of chocolate powder, was handed out to the children on March 29th 1946.

Shortly afterwards, on April 1dt 1046, it was recorded that the air-raid shelters were being removed.

More gifts, in the form of sweets from Australia, were given to the children on April 4th 1946 and on April 10th 1946 the Lord Mayor of Plymouth handed out 33 books to those made orphans during the War.

June 5th 1946 was a very special day for the children.  At the Victory Celebrations they were treated to a Punch and Judy show and a film show.  Copies of the King's Speech were handed out.

At the end of the school year Miss B Petherick retired and was replaced as Acting Headmaster from September 9th 1946 by Mr G Tall.

Exceedingly low temperatures brought about the closure of the School for two days on December 17th and 18th 1946.

Miss E M Leigh became Head Mistress from January 13th 1947.

The School was closed once again at the end of January as the classroom temperatures were too low.  There was said to be 18 inches of snow on the road outside.

On November 24th 1947 there was another distribution of items sent over by the Canadian Red Cross - orange juice, chocolate and  milk powder.  More goodies were handed around on February 19th 1948.

It was recorded in the School's log book that it was overcrowded, with 631 pupils on the school register.  There was accommodation for only 526.  That figure did drop after Plym View Primary School, Highfield Primary School and Lipson Vale Primary School were opened.

Mr L M Taylor became Headmaster on September 8th 1952.

A party of children travelled to the Royal Cinema on January 25th 1954 to see a film about the Mount Everest Expedition.

On April 16th 1956 Mr R I Drake replaced Mr Taylor as Headmaster.  He in turn was replaced by Mr R P Hobbs on September 9th 1963 and Mr A C Sawle on September 13th 1965.
