PLYMOUTH SCHOOLS  |  POST-WAR SCHOOLS 1945-1996

CHARLES VOLUNTARY PRIMARY SCHOOL

As a result of the reorganisation of education brought about by the Education Act 1944, the junior and infant school in Tavistock Place became the Charles Voluntary Primary School while the senior section at Shaftesbury Cottages became the Charles Voluntary Secondary Modern School.

At the beginning of 1955 the Headmistress of the Primary School was Mrs B Deagon  [1].  She had joined the School in 1912 as Miss B H Smith and remained until she retired in later in 1955  [2].

The primary school in Tavistock Place closed at the end of July 1961 and the building became an annex for the City of Plymouth Museum & Art Gallery.
