Coombe Dean School is in Charnhill Way, Plymstock. The site of the School covers some 22 acres and from the start was to be used not only for a school but also for recreational facilities for the local community. Construction started in February 1974 on phases 1 and 2, which would cost £810,000 and accommodate 750 pupils. The contractor for the construction work was Messrs Staverton Builders Ltd of Totnes and the School was designed by the Devon County Architect, Mr Charles Weeks. It would accommodate 1,260 pupils when construction of the third stage was completed. The site is surrounded by an estate of old people's bungalows constructed by the Greater London Council. Coombe Dean School was opened on Monday March 1st 1976 as a comprehensive school, when 144 boys and girls arrived to form the nucleus of the new school. The main intake would be in September 1976.
