JOHN KITTO COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The John Kitto Community College is situated at Honicknowle Lane, Pennycross, Plymouth.  It was formerly the Burrington Secondary Modern School and the John Kitto Comprehensive School.

Burrington Secondary Modern School

The School was built on the site of Burrington House and was opened on Monday September 8th 1958.  There were at that time 299 children attending the School.  They were allocated to one of four houses, St Andrew, St Pancras, St Alban and St Francis.  The School motto was "Conabor" - 'I will try'.

By September 1961 there were 255 boys and 272 girls at the School, with twenty-one staff.  The first Head Master was Mr W J Button, a former pupil of Devonport High Schools for Boys.  He retired in 1983.

John Kitto Comprehensive School

On September 10th 1986 the chairperson of the Devon Education Authority, Margaret Rogers, launched a £900,000 rebuilding programme, after which the School was renamed the John Kitto Comprehensive School.

The School was opened in September 1989.  The school's badge was composed of the emblems of the old Burleigh, Honicknowle and Burrington schools and the YMCA's Kitto Centre on the opposite side of Honicknowle Lane.
