PLYMOUTH SCHOOLS  |  POST-WAR SCHOOLS 1945-1996

OLD PRIORY JUNIOR SCHOOL, PLYMPTON

The Old Priory Junior School is situated in the Ridgeway, Plympton, Plymouth.

It was from this site on Wednesday November 20th 1968 that the Lord Lieutenant of Devon, Lord Roborough, opened four schools in the Plymouth area: Old Priory Junior, Chaddlewood Primary and Longcause Schools at Plympton, and Elburton Primary School at Plymstock.  He unveiled a plaque at Old Priory and identical plaques were to be installed at the other three schools.  [1]

All four premises had been designed by the Devon County architect as they had all been planned while education was in the County's hands.   Plymouth took over Plympton and Plymstock on April 1st 1967 and thus inherited responsibility for completing the project.  [1]

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Alderman Ivor Lowe, presided over the ceremony and the Vote of Thanks to Lord Roborough was proposed by Alderman Leslie F Paul, chairman of Plymouth's Education Committee.  The Schools were blessed by the Archdeacon of Plymouth and vicar of St Mary's Church at Plympton, the Venerable F A J Matthews.  [1]

A similar "virtual opening" ceremony was used at the opening of Plymouth Airport.
