PLYMPTON St MAURICE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Plympton St Maurice National School / St Maurice Church of England Primary School

The Plympton St Maurice National School was built in what became School Lane in 1874 although apparently opened in 1868.  It closed on Wednesday July 21st 1954 and was replaced with a new school building.

Plympton St Maurice County Primary School

The present St Maurice Primary School on Buller's Hill, Plympton, was officially opened on Tuesday November 16th 1954 by Doctor J W Cook, Principal of the University College of the South West.  The pupils were given the Monday off (15th) in order to prepare the School for the event.  The building had been in use since the start of term, Monday September 13th 1954.

It was designed by the Devon County Architect, Mr H V de Courcy Hague, and cost £33,873 to erect.  It had accommodation for 240 children although there were only 150 on the register on the opening day.  The first head master was Mr H K Rowse, who was previously head of Mullion County Primary School, in Cornwall.
