THORNBURY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Thornbury Primary School is situated at Miller Way, Estover, Plymouth.

The School opened on September 5th 1978, with a capacity to take 215 pupils.  But the opening had not got quite according to plan.   Two days before the opening there was no furnitire or equipment and during the night of September 4th/5th the boiler burst and flooded the building.  But al least by then they did have some tables and chairs.  The first Headmistress was Mrs Elizabeth Tarr, whose annual salary was £5,120.  There were just 72 pupils on opening day but the numbers eventually grew to a peak of 593.

Thornbury Primary School was formally opened on May 17th 1979 by Councillor F A C Pinney of Devon County Council.

Mrs Tarr served for 29 years until she retired on Wednesday March 28th 2007.
