St JAMES'S HALL

FILM OF THE BURNS versus JOHNSON FIGHT

During the week of March 15th 1909 Mr Mudnell, manager of the St James's Hall in Union Street, Plymouth, shew the film of the Burns versus Johnson boxing match.

This was described as 'a costly special attraction from Andrews celebrated pictures'.   Admission prices ranged from 3d to one shilling.

The fight had actually taken place in Sydney, Australia, on December 26th 1908. Jack Johnson gave Tommy Burns such a beating that the police stopped the fight in the 14th round.  As a result, Johnson became the first black heavy-weight champion of the world and the news caused riots in the United States of America.
