Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Sailors' Home was situated at number 15 Marlborough Street, Devonport. The Home was formally opened on the evening of Saturday February 1st 1896 following six months of intensive effort by the naval chaplain, Father T P Kent, and the Royal Navy. Mr J J O'Sullivan, a retired Chief Petty Officer, was the manager. Facilities provided included a refreshment bar, recreation and reading room, library, baths and lavatories with hot and cold water, iron bedsteads with spring mattresses, and an open-air promenade. There was sleeping accommodation for between forty and fifty men, with private rooms for warrant officers and chief petty officers. Although the Home was primarily for the use of Roman Catholic members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, those from other denominations were not to be excluded. Sources:
