STADDON WALL

Updated:  28 January 2011

If the Plymouth Data Website had a Frequently Asked Questions page, the first entry would be "What is the wall at Staddon Heights, overlooking Plymouth Sound?"

A number of answers have been offered over the years, the most popular and often repeated being that it was intended to look like a fort to any invading navy.  Sadly, this was never correct.

The wall is, in fact, a butt for a smokeless powder rifle range that was constructed in the 1860s.
