STEAM TRAWLERS

On Wednesday March 23rd 1955 what was thought to be the last steam trawler in the West of England left Plymouth's Sutton Harbour for the scrap yard.

Named "Perverus", the vessel was owned by Mr Percy Turner, a local fish merchant.  He found that it was increasingly costly both to fuel and to maintain and had replaced most of his fleet with motor vessels.  The boat had been well maintained and he had offered it for sale but there were no offers.

During its three years fishing off Plymouth, the "Perverus" had caught sturgeons (the Queen's fish, of course) as well as mines and torpedoes, luckily without sustaining any damage.

The name was derived from the names of the senior and two junior partners.
