A THIRD LIFE, 1977 TO 1980
In March 1965 Mr Arthur Fox, a Manchester businessman and club-owner, had reopened the New Palace Theatre of Varieties in Union Street, Plymouth, as the Star Bingo Hall. Ten years later, in the summer of 1975, the Theatre changed hands yet again, this time being purchased by EMI. The Palace reopened yet again as a theatre on April 19th 1977 with the English Music Theatre Company's "Magic Flute" and on May 7th 1977 the Carmenians ended a three-week Jubilee Season. In July 1978 work started on refurbishing, the Theatre then being under the management of Mr John Redgrave. It made another reopening on December 23rd 1978 with "Cinderella", for which the doors opened at 6.45pm and the show started 7.15. But by now Messrs New Palace Theatre (Plymouth) Ltd was finding it hard to survive and suddenly on Tuesday May 27th 1980 it ceased trading and the contents were put up for sale. It was heading for its final closure.
