FLEET LIST

Horse-drawn tramcars

Gauge: 4ft 8½ins.  The livery used was emerald green and cream.

1872 - Numbers 1 to 8 were double-deck open-top tramcars of unknown manufacture.  They had "knifeboard" seats along the top deck.

1879 - Number 9 ? - A new 'prettily-painted and comfortably-fitted' tramcar appeared on the streets on November 12th 1879.   Built by Messrs J G Brill and Company of Philadelphia, it was not so lofty as the others in the fleet but longer and wider.  The stairway was 'an improvement on the skeleton steps of the cars in use.'

By 1895 - It is known that in 1895 the Company owned 12 tramcars and 116 horses.   Some of the trams had the normal traverse seats on the upper deck.

Electric tramcars

Gauge:  3ft 6ins.  The livery used was emerald green and cream.

1901 - Numbers 1 to 12 were double-deck open-top tramcars built by the Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works Ltd at Preston in Lancashire for Messrs Dick, Kerr and Company Ltd.  They sat 22 passengers inside and 26 outside.  Each car had two 25-horse power motors made by the Walker Electric Company, of Cleveland, USA, and were mounted on trucks manufactured in Philadelphia by Messrs J G Brill and Company.  In addition to the hand ratchet and slipper brakes, the cars were also fitted with electric emergency brakes.  The interior was lit by six electric lamps and two roof lights, while the outside had the usual platform and head lights.

One of the former horse trams was converted in a water carrier for watering the streets.

1903 - There was no car number 13.  Number 14 was the same as numbers 1 to 12.

1904 - Number 15 was the same as numbers 1 to 12 and 14.

1906 - Number 16 was a double-deck open-top tramcar built by the United Electric Car Company, successor to the original builder and a subsidiary of Messrs Dick, Kerr & Company Ltd, who made its two 30hp electric motors and the control equipment.
