TURNCHAPEL JUBILEE HALL

The Turnchapel Jubilee Hall was erected in 1897 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Victoria.  The Reverend James John Tapson, the vicar of St John the Evangelist, laid the memorial stone on Sunday June 27th 1897.  The Hall measured some 27 feet by 16 feet.

It was mainly used for recreation by the men of the village, the women being at home doing the cooking, washing, mending and looking after the children.  During the Second World War it fell into disrepair and on the evening of Wednesday September 3rd 1952 a public meeting was held to plan future action.  Although the masonry and brickwork was in good condition, the roof, a window and part of the flooring badly needed repairing.

A committee was formed to raise funds for its renovation.   The Reverend Leonard Pike was appointed chairman, with Mr D G Chapman as honorary secretary and Mr Frank Powell as honorary treasurer.  The other members were Messrs J R Demellweek, Guest and W H Perry and Mrs Mills.

The hall was duly renovated and brought back into use for the Hooe and Turnchapel Gardens and Allotments Association, the Boringdon Football Club, the Women's Institute, the Mothers' Union, and the Turnchapel Ladies Carnival Committee, amongst others.

However, the same thing was allowed to happen again but this time, during the 1970s, it was demolished and the site turned in to a paved garden, where residents and visitors can relax in peace.  The memorial stone is set in to the wall by the roadway.
