WESTON PEVEREL

MANADON HOUSE

Created:  20 January 2012

Manadon House was erected in 1681 on the site of a previous property reputed to date from 1567.  [1]

The Manor of Manadon was from the 17th century held jointly with that of Weston Peverel by the Carews, the Hewers, and Mr Humphrey Hall.  It was only when Miss Letitia Hall married Mr John Alexander Parlby, of Stonehall, East Stonehouse, that Manadon became the residence of the Hall-Parlby family.  [1]

There was a great chimney piece over the large fireplace in the kitchen and a fine Adams' chimney piece in the drawing room.  The staircase was Jacobean.  In the grounds was the great barn 'with its nine masonry pillars like small round towers'.  [1]

The Manadon Estate of 487 acres was offered to Plymouth City Council for the sum of £82,500, as fixed by the District Valuer.  However, the Council decided by a small majority not to proceed with the offer.  Two local syndicates were also trying to acquire the Estate but when the Council turned down the offer a new party entered the discussions, the Saint Aubyn Estates Ltd.  They had previously owned the whole of the parish of Stoke Damerel but had sold much of it over the years.  [2]

Thus Manadon Estate was sold to the Saint Aubyn Estates Ltd for £90,000 plus approximately £5,000 for the redemption of tithes.  The Company's agent, Captain C L Pendlebury, said that 'if any of it is used for building, only the best type of houses will be erected, and that any development will be a credit to ourselves and the surroundings'.  [2]
