THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PLYMOUTH DATA WEBSITE

Plymouth Data, as such, was born shortly after I purchased my first word processor, an Amstrad PCW9512, on August 12th 1988 and started to convert my hand-written notes into what I called my encyclopaedia of Plymouth history.  The design at that time was based on the Sweet & Maxwell legal encyclopaedias.  Because Locoscript would only permit 8 character file names Plymouth Data became PLYMDATA.

The website itself was born on a hospital bed at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital in the days following those terrible events of September 11th 2001.  I was recovering from a heart attack and had completely lost my interest in books, local history and everything else, for that matter.  My old friend from Keyham days, Chris Bollard, had been on at me for years to "get connected" to the Internet and my enforced rest gave me the chance to change my mind and develop an idea for a website.

I got connected on Monday November 19th and launched the embryo website at 8.30pm on Monday January 7th 2002.  It currently runs to 1,500 pages.
